選舉史上首度不同政黨的大選合作，從結果論來看，民國黨主席徐欣瑩選擇擔任宋楚瑜副手，民國黨卻只取得約1.6％的政黨票，雙方差距甚遠，親、民合作讓親民黨獲得最大利益。

親民黨總統候選人宋楚瑜參選總統3連敗，但因母雞帶小雞擴大效應，替親民黨爭取知名度與支持度，儘管區域立委全部被殲滅，但仍獲6.5％的政黨票，取得3席不分區立委，替親民黨保住國會生存命脈，在立法院還有黨團可獨立發聲。

2012年立委選舉，親民黨同樣有宋楚瑜參選總統的效應，政黨票低空掠過5％門檻，成功取得2席不分區立委，及平原原住民1席區域立委，剛好可組成黨團，今年在政黨票18路諸侯搶攻的戰況下，老宋再殺出一條血路，政黨票是所有政黨中的第3高票。

儘管這場親、民合作，一則以喜一則以悲，宋楚瑜昨還是拉著民國黨主席徐欣瑩的手，強調政黨攜手合作的重要性，除了感謝支持親民黨，也替民國黨加油打氣，他說，「每個政黨可能有他的訴求，但不是要對著幹，而是攜手同行。」
宋楚瑜此次參選的如意算盤，是希望結合民國黨的挹注，把餅做大；隨著宋楚瑜此次主打年輕訴求、策略文宣成功，比上屆拿下近4倍的得票，拿下6.5％政黨票。

宋楚瑜昨天發表敗選感言時曾提到，「我們本來就不期待兩個政黨都能夠通過」，代表親民黨與民國黨在合作時就了解到，兩黨之間必然會有取捨狀況發生，然而這次總統大選仍然是知名度高的「宋省長」表演的舞台，最後民國黨未嚐到甜頭，卻讓親民黨壯大實力，才讓宋楚瑜這場選戰中，得以用政黨票來保住親民黨命脈。
